Buchbeschreibung Soft cover. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. Yellowing on cover. Essay by Rob Powell. John Davies was born in County Durham, England, and spent his formative years living in coal mining and farming communities. After moving to Manchester in 1982, he began to document key industries and the social landscapes left over from the Industrial Revolution in order to reveal their impact in shaping an urban environment. In northern England and South Wales he documented the areas devoted to coal mining, textiles, steel, quarrying, railways and shipping along with the town and cities associated with these industries. A Green and Pleasant Land was published to accompany Davies' exhibition of these photographs at The Photographers' Gallery. Signed by Author(s). Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers ABE-1617289278697

Buchbeschreibung Soft cover. Zustand: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing. Soft cover. Photographically illustrated wrappers; no dust jacket as issued. Photographs by John Davies. Introduction by Michael Wood. Essay by Rob Powell. Includes a chronology, exhibition history and collections. Designed by Christopher Lord. Unpaginated (80 pp.), with 37 duotone plates. 9 x 11-3/4 inches. [Cited in Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, The Photobook: A History, Volume II. (London and New York: Phaidon, 2006).] Scarce. Near Fine (areas of toning along front and rear covers, wear to the extremities; else Fine). From Parr and Badger: "Davies focuses on the changing industrial landscape, shaped by the Industrial Revolution and the exigencies of two world wars. Following World War II, this landscape began to change radically, as heavy industry was replaced by newer light industry, and manufacturing and mining were superseded by service industries. Social housing, too, changed the face of British cities, as housing patterns based on the cottage gave way to tower blocks. From around 1960 to 1980, the face of the UK changed more than it had done in the previous 80 years or so. As one practising the objectivity of the New Topographic mode, Davies allows his pictures to speak for themselves, yet by focusing on patterns of land usage, he asks questions about the kinds of political and economic forces that determine the often poor results of allowing full reign to the market.".
