When the wolves have cast him out and the pigs, dispite his help, still feel unhappy to have him around, he ends up in town where Dan, a boy, helps him to avoid capture by the bloodthirsty townsfolk. Menanced by the wolf pack, the humans accept Joe's help to frighten the wolves away. This all sounds a bit bleak but, in fact, the story-telling, with its dilemmas, tension, action and humour - Joe walks on two legs, wearing sheriff's gear, with holes in his boots to let his feet stick through, for example - is so good that the story is immensely enjoyable...' --School Librarian

Joe is a good wolf. He can't hunt and kill; in fact he'd rather eat blackberries. What a disgrace to the wolf pack! When he is thrown out by his Mum and Dad he faces a world where no one believes there can be a 'good' wolf. Everyone knows wolves eat sheep and didn't one try to eat Little Red Riding Hood and her Grandma? How can Joe convince animals that are terrified of him, or people who blast him with shotguns, that he is not the sort of wolf they are used to?
