A wonderful glossary...delight in its contents....reciting just a few words will surely bring a broad smile to your face --Michael Burridge
William Dickinson's first glossary of Cumberland dialect was published in 1859. Twenty years later, a second edition appeared with major additions and revisions. this dictionary is based very much on that later edition and great care has been taken to retain much of its original character. The native folk speech of Oald Cummberlan has its roots in the Norse and Old English tongues, and is a peculiar language that once proved almost intelligible to people living beyond the borders of the county. Although some words are still commonly heard across Cumberland (which now forms the northern section of Cumbria) this book will re-introduce many of the old, lost and forgotten words and phrases to present generations. This comprehensive edition of William Dickinson's dictionary contains upwards of 7000 words and phrases. It has been painstakingly edited by Cumbrian historian, Richard Byers from Mr Dickinson's original text.
