Drama, action, passion, disaster, and the pure adrenaline buzz of overlanding are all here in Sam Manicom’s vibrant third book.
Begin this three year voyage of discovery through Southern Africa, South and Central America with Sam and his girlfriend Birgit Schunemann as they head out of the Port of Mombasa in Kenya to begin their first year riding together. She is a complete novice rider, and with huge courage and determination masters the change from bicycle traveller to motorcycle overlander. Travel with them as they explore what has been described as being home to some of the most dramatic scenery in the world. Add to the mix Sam's acute observations of cultural differences, encounters with wild animals, Force 8 gales, desert travels, the people and the laughter.
From Cape Town in South Africa they travel across the southern Pacific to Argentina in a way that will both surprise the reader, and act as the perfect way to open up the next two years of travel in this very different land. Though Africa and South America are on the same latitude, they are incredibly different in both landscape and cultures. This is a true tale of the unexpected.
Sam’s richly descriptive writing opens up a world where people travel their own fragile and often unsupported paths. He has a gift to describe people and places, why they were there, and how they fit in. The mix of scrapes and encounters with people along the way, illuminate the darker times like shafts of sunlight and suck you right into every scene.
Distant Suns is the third in the ‘Every Day an Adventure’ series which tell the stories of Sam Manicom’s eight year journey around the world; the earlier books being ‘Into Africa’ and ‘Under Asian Skies’.
He's been described as 'One of the foremost and most readable adventure motorcyclists writing about their adventures on two wheels.’ In 2018 Sam was presented with the 'Spirit of Adventure' Award by Overland Magazine in recognition of his contribution to overlanding and long distance motorcycle travel.
Motorcycle Mojo ‘His descriptions are vivid and precise and he made me laugh. Manicom’s self-confessed magnetism for trouble results in great stories. There truly is never a dull moment’
ADVMoto Magazine ‘There’s something special about this story’
Motorcycle Explorer Magazine ‘An epic ride that leaves you immersed in the sights, sounds, touch, smell and taste of a journey of true human discovery’
Visor Down ‘Comparisons with Ted Simon’s seminal ‘Jupiter’s Travels’ are somewhat inevitable, but Manicom’s work does not suffer in the least by comparison to his illustrious forebear.’
Motorcycle Sport and Leisure ‘A refreshing change’
Daily Record ‘Few travel writers can describe sights and smells so provocatively as Sam’
Trail Bike Magazine ‘A truly involving and enthralling book. Distant Suns doesn’t just document the journey, Sam also describes cultural differences, traditions and lifestyles of the various countries they cross. A really great read that’ll doubtless give you itchy feet’
BM Riders Club ‘If you have any sense of adventure and enjoy travel on your motorcycle, then this really is a must read’
Christian Motorcyclists Association UK ‘I couldn’t put Sam’s book down, as I read, it wasn’t so much a case of ‘being there’ as you wanted to fill your bike tank and ‘go there’ as soon as possible’
RiDE Magazine ‘Author Manicom and his companion are the real thing’
Motorcycle Monthly ‘You can let can your imagination free and rely on the narration to paint the picture. It’s easy to feel like you are with them on their extensive, interesting and simply epic travels.’

Sam Manicom, overlander, traveller and author of 4 motorcycle books, was born in the Congo in Central West Africa where his parents worked. His family returned to the UK when he was 10 and he has been travelling for much of his life. His first solo trip was age 16 by bicycle into Europe. Many backpacking, hiking, cycling and hitch hiking journeys later, and back in the UK but wanting to do something completely different, Sam learned to ride a motorcycle. Within 3 months of starting to ride, he set off to travel the length of Africa. This 1-year trip turned into an 8-year, 200,000 mile, around the world motorcycle adventure across 55 countries. Sam’s 4 books take the reader travelling through the different sections of the eight-year journey. Africa – ‘Into Africa’, Asia and the Middle East – ‘Under Asian Skies’, Southern Africa and South America – ‘Distant Suns’, and North America – ‘Tortillas to Totems’. He now works full time in the world of adventure travel. He’s a keen advocate of motorcycle travel in particular and when not writing his books, magazine articles and conducting multimedia travel presentations within Europe and the USA, he’s very much involved with travel related organisations. Sam is a co-host for Adventure Rider Radio RAW. In 2017 he was awarded the Overland Magazine ‘Spirit of Adventure’ Award for his contribution to Overlanding. When he isn’t writing or presenting, Sam and his partner Birgit are usually off riding somewhere. Sam’s latest book ‘The Moment Collectors’ - released in February 2022.
