Of Charles Dickens' incomparable output, a handful of his novels are consistently among those which readers and critics alike debate as the greatest of all, and among these Great Expectations remains, for many readers, the most formative: it is the greatest coming-of-age story about a young man in English literature. Great Expectations was published in 1860-61 and its story of ambition versus fidelity, youthful mistakes and education, and admirable ambition overcoming social limitations has made it Dickens' most popular novel. As an appendix this edition includes the book's original ending.Biografía del autor:
Charles Dickens was born in 1812 near Portsmouth and lived until 1870. The Christmas Books were first published in a single volume in 1852, bringing together five stories which Charles Dickens wrote specially for the Christmas season, beginning in 1843 with A Christmas Carol. Over the next three years Dickens published The Chimes, The Cricket on the Hearth and The Battle of Life. There was no story in 1847 but a fifth, The Haunted Man, appeared in 1848.
The cover illustration for Great Expectations is by acclaimed milliner Steven Jones OBE, whose work was recently featured at the Victoria & Albert Museum, attracting 100,000 visitors. Last year he designed for the collections of Cristian Dior, Vivienne Westwood, Marc Jacobs and John Galliano. He has also created hats for films by Steven Spielberg and for Audrey Tatou in last year's 'Coco before Chanel'. For Great Expectations, his special knowledge of fashion history informs a wonderful sketch of Pip's journey from a poor child's cap to a gentleman's finery, reproduced on White's printed cloth covers.
