Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor

For the first twenty years of his photographic life, Charles Harbutt was a photojournalist, working mostly through Magnum Photos (of which he was twice president) for magazines in Europe, Japan and the United States. Since 1980, he has increasingly pursued more personal interests in photography. Two books and one monograph have been published of his work:

Travelog: MIT Press, 1974. Arles award: Best photographic book of 1974 His pictures have been widely collected and exhibited at (among others) the Museum of Modern Art, the Corcoran Gallery, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris. He is represented in New York by the Laurence Miller Gallery. His negatives, master prints and other archival material has been added to the collection of the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson. The Center contains the work of Garry Winogrand, Edward Weston, Ansel Adams and W. Eugene Smith, among others.

He has been guest artist at the Rhode Island School of Design, MIT and the Art Institute of Chicago and taught at Cooper Union, Parsons, Pratt Institute, Bard College and in numerous workshops here and abroad.

Charles Harbutt was born in Camden, New Jersey and became a photographer in Teaneck, New Jersey at thirteen. An internationally know photojournalist, his work is in such collections as the Museum of Modern Art, The Art Institute of Chicago, the Bibliotheque Nationale, the Stedjlik Museum and the Corcoran Gallery. His first book, Travelog (MIT Press), won the Arles award as the best photographic book of 1974. In 1981, leaving Magnum, he helped start the international photo agency, Archive Pictures, Inc. He lives in New York with his wife and three children.
