A history of how one of the grand summer cottages in the Berkshire Mountains of Western Massachusetts from the Gilded Age landed up as an upscale resort and spa. Includes a history of the tradition of building grand summer cottages in the Berkshires, including how the area went from a wilderness to a Gilded Age resort, a history of some of the more important 'cottages' (mansions & palaces, really) built in the area, and specifically the history of Bellefontaine - one of these grand cottages - that was originally built for Giraud and Jane Van Ness Foster in Lenox, Massachusetts. It was designed by the architectural firm of Carrere and Hastings of New York and completed in 1897. In addition to a description of the architecture of the home, there is also a depiction of family life at the cottage which continued until 1945 when Mr. Foster died. His son sold the property in 1946; much of the mansion burned down in 1949. In the late 1980's, the property was sold to the Canyon Ranch Spa organization from Arizona who were seeking a location on the East Coast. They have restored and rebuilt as much as possible, preserving where feasible. Horizontal format, measuring 11" x 8.5" with 59 + pages. Illustrations throughout, including many vintage sepia-toned photographs. All photographs and photo-editing by Amy Zuckerman. The center of the front cover has what appears to be a lovely 'colorized' photograph of the gardens of Bellefontaine. Inside back cover has the remnants of something that had been pasted there.
