Your Weapon Within: How to Lower the Risk of Sexual Assault is a compilation of safety and prevention tips that stress awareness and the need to learn how to identify potentially dangerous situations. Mr. Nelson also suggests some non- traditional weapons, such as pencils, hot water, and soil, that can be used to help facilitate an escape during a physical confrontation. Also discussed in this guide is how traditional gender roles, sexism, and cultural conditioning can lead to sexual violence against women. Why does our society continue to blame and burden women with the feeling that sexual assault is only a woman's problem? The person who commits the crime is the person who is responsible for the crime. Sexual assault is, first and foremost, a man's problem. We have to stop putting the blame on the victims whether they are men, women, or children.

I'd like, through this book, to focus on two related issues regarding sexual assault. First, sexual assault is the product of a societal attitude based on sexism and has existed for a very long time. To change a societal attitude in a short time is unrealistic. The problem is going to take constant work and awareness. We must all - parents, children, teachers, counselors, clergy, coaches - understand that the way we view women and the attitude we possess about them will have a direct bearing on the problem in the future.

The sexist ideals and attitudes most of us have learned and accepted, have fostered this problem. It's only in the last 20 years or so that the efforts of interested people have begun to turn the tide. Our heightened awareness due to the recent wave of violent crimes has also helped focus attention on the problem.

If we want to eliminate sexist attitudes, we must be willing to become aware so we can openly identify them. We must be willing to confront and challenge those who perpetuate these ideas and attitudes. And, most importantly, we must show our support in every action.

Second, is the issue of here and now: how do we deal with the threat of sexual assault and violent crimes on a day-to-day basis? I believe that through awareness and education we can lower the risk of sexual assault and feel more confident about avoiding such attacks.

Education is freedom. The more knowledge we gain, the more options and choices we have based on that knowledge. Therefore, we have more freedom to make the best choices as we go through life.
