This is a thorough study and positive approach to the trials of caring for a dementia victim. Emphasis is upon management of the patient and problems that may confront the caregiver and how others have dealt with them. It provides the reader with many facts and helpful hints that are advantageous during the course of the disease, both at home and in a nursng home.
Alzheimer's is a regressive, rather than a progressive disease in that it takes fully functional adults and reduces them to retarded infancy. Consider the mind a movie film, put it on a faulty projecter, and each time it is shown more of the impressions are destroyed. If you continue to run it on faulty equipment the impressions will disappear altogether. This is what actually happens to the memory process of the patient as the mind undergoes the ravages of the disease.
A compilation of input from many caregivers or their families, it dispels the myth that the mentally impaired are mad or possessed of the devil. A theory that has been ingrained into mankind since the dawn of time. The reader is challenged to discard the so-called shame, perceive mental impairment as an illness, and identify it as a socially acceptable disease. The author is experienced in both caregiving and in factual research and the text reflects both.
