Dr. Jacob R. Mittleider developed a nationwide nursery business for 19 years, then retired and has devoted the past 36 years of his life to helping people throughout the world become self-sufficient by teaching and showing them how to grow food. He has written 10 outstanding books on vegetable gardening, and is well known in over 30 countries for the great changes he has made in the health and standard of living of all who have followed his simple scientific methods. He currently lives with his wife Mildred in Salt Lake City.
From Chapter 2 - Twenty Salient Characteristics. 1. Mittleider will teach you how to raise an abundance of vegetables and other crops on almost any soil, in practically any season, in almost any climate, on almost any land, and virtually at any elevation - in short, under almost any conditions. 2. The program is scientific and not a passing fad. It carefully carries out the best agricultural procedures. 3. The program is simple, in the sense that almost anyone can learn it and carry it out, either in home gardens or on large acreages. 4. The program prepares the soil to produce a great variety of commercial-quality vegetables, as well as fruits and nursery stock - in fact, almost any kind of geographically acclimated crops, plus many presently considered unacclimated. 5. The program uses any available organic materials, including green-manure crops; but this program is not what is commonly referred to as complete organic gardening. Additional mineral fertilizers are used to build up a complete balance - in other words, to restore the soil to its Edenic composition as far as is humanly possible. 6. Weeds are taboo. They are simply not permitted in the garden. 7. Practically every square foot of the fields is made to produce. This plan makes a very economical operation, as it takes no more effort or expense to prepare and keep up such fields than less intensively cultivated areas. 8. To produce almost perfect plants, the gardener should start many varieties in a greenhouse that is kept almost 100% free of insects, weeds, and plant diseases. 9. This new program produces results - fantastically abundant crops neatly uniform in quality, size, and color. 10. Mittleider gardens are a financial success and are actually saving people from slow starvation and gardens from failure and closure.
