LAKE BLUFF, IL -- When Cornelius (Con) Callahan’s grandson Nicholas Turelli was four years old he was told by his mother (Tia, Callahan's eldest daughter) that he was to be the “ring-bearer” in his Uncle’s wedding. Two weeks after agreeing to this interesting assignment, Nicholas asked his mother, “When do I get my bear costume?” This charming and true story, an “..out of the mouths of babes” tale, became the inspiration for Callahan’s newly-released and classically-told fairy tale, “THE RINGBEAR.” But fairy tales are not just for children --as the French writer and pilot, Saint-Exupery, said, ‘Fairy tales are stories for children with meanings for adults’. ”
“THE RINGBEAR” tells the story of a young bear who doesn’t know what kind of bear he is until he is given a splendid and lasting identity after he rescues a wedding that has gone amiss .....”And ever since, the bear has been known as Ringbear. And he attends all the weddings.” The story, recommended for all young children, is a classical children’s fairy tale, beginning with the phrase, “Once upon a time” and ending “And ever since.” AUTHORBIO: Callahan, 71, is a highly-experienced trial lawyer (and former partner in the Chicago law firm of Lord Bissell & Brook), who had, before retiring in 1995, tried jury cases for more than a quarter of a century, trying over 100 cases to verdict in Chicago and other jurisdictions. He also served as president of the National Association of Railroad Trial Counsel. Says Callahan, “A trial lawyer has to constantly face the unexpected; therefore, the successful trial lawyer necessarily possesses an adaptable mind and nature, ever-ready to adjust his arguments with ease.” Only a skilled and practiced trial lawyer could turn so effortlessly to another medium --the childrens fairy tale. While writing a children’s fairy tale may seem unusual for someone of Callahan’s age, he explains its attraction readily: Says Callahan, “I have a deep and abiding affection for the days of my youth, and believe in the purity and innocence that lives in the hearts of children, and writing a fairy tale came very naturally to me.”
Callahan is also the author of “A Childhood Memoir,” recently published in the Wheeling (West Virginia) News Register, and of “THE SEARCH FOR TRUTH,” a well-received textbook on the science -- and the art -- of the jury trial process. A true Renaissance man, he is currently at work on a series of essays on the Seven Arts for publication in a magazine format.
With the “THE RINGBEAR” tale in place, Callahan went to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago for an illustrator. Chad Verrill, a gifted artist, was chosen; studying at the School during the time he illustrated “THE RINGBEAR,” Verrill, 27, now resides in Portland, Maine where he continues to pursue his illustration career. “THE RINGBEAR” was his first major illustration assignment, and he says he was “.....excited at the chance to work on it .”
