Author Steve Bernstein was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1961, two minutes after his fraternal twin brother, David. His older brothers (Billy and Bobby) are also twins. Fortunately, there are no other siblings. Steve ia a Managing Director for Salomon Smith Barney, a member of Citigroup. He is married, has three daughters, and lives on Long Island. He lived in Japan for six years with his family, returning to New York in 1999, and speaks less Japanese then you could possibly imagine. Besides writing, his interests include drawing, playing the mandolin, racquet sports, and listening to the Grateful Dead. He detests transportation sports (running, swimming, skiing.)
Funny - and true - these stories of growing up in Brooklyn in the '60s and '70s are full of high jinks and misadventures. You'll meet characters like Nana, the grandmother whose cursing can make men blush, Jeff, whose rooftop was the best for throwing eggs on passersby, Goldie, a "Jackie Gleason with breasts", Lola, the ebullient cleaning woman from the South, and Mort, the father who takes life dead serious and never laughs. These kids knew how to keep life interesting. They're the kids you're glad you didn't have.

Mort's favorite dog My father had an interesting relationship with animals. If they were on TV, he couldn't get enough of them. God forbid you talked during Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom. You would be ordered out of the room immediately. My father also had a special bond with Marlin Perkins, the show's host. Marlin would explain the dangerous feat that Jim, his lackey, was about to undertake, while he himself was perched safely in the studio. My father would sit safely in his chair, grunting the occasional, "Quiet already!" as if we were disturbing the animals. As much as he loved watching animals, Mort couldn't stand it when my Aunt Goldie's dogs were in the apartment. If they happily trotted over to his chair and started sniffing him, he would scream, "Go 'way from here, Goddammit!" He showed them no affection whatsoever. I never saw him pet any of the dogs even once. A gentle kick would be all the effort he'd muster. This drove Goldie crazy. One day, when we were having a large family dinner, Goldie turned to my father and asked, "Morty, of all the dogs I ever had, which one did you like the best?" Expecting him to show his disgust, we were all shocked when he quickly said, "Bo-Bo." Goldie beamed with pleasure. You could see the joy in her eyes at Bo-Bo being my father's favorite. She cooed, "Oh, Morty, why Bo-Bo?" My father looked her straight in the eye and replied coolly, "Because he's dead." I wonder what Marlin Perkins would have said.
