Inhaltsangabe

The Last Secret... is psychological novel that examines motivational aspects that propel certain sexually and physically abused siblings to succeed while some siblings linger in repetitive failures. It explores how siblings having had their hopes crushed as children are still haunted by past tyrannies, yet some overcome while others can not muster up the will to forgive and forget the oppressive nature of a tyrannical father. It also looks at how people are distorted by harboring shameful secrets that should never be kept, and how that distortion can remain and affect normal trust that is so vital in relationship.

The two main characters function as the protagonists that overcome the antagonism of a contorted past. In the male character's, (Lomax) attempt to assist Dawnelle (the second main character) overcome the contortions of her past, he discovers that he too has secrets of his own family that he has kept unwittingly because there were no triggers to motivate him to explore them. In so discovering, he realizes that one need not consciously know of a past in order to be consciously bound to it.

When Lomax discovers his family's secrets, he realizes that without any knowledge of that past, he has been traveling in a path that seemingly is dictated by the incidents and events of that past. But his knowledge of Dawnelle's past and his assistance to her to overcome the nightmares of that past liberate him and move him from a static to a reformed character.

This is a present time novel, set in the San Francisco/Oakland Bay Area, and it deals with social and psychological issues and stresses of living that are peculiar all highly educated African-American professionals. These are new types of African American characters. They are not characters bound in slavery, nor are they characters pondering how to get a good man or a good woman, but characters who consider less mundane and universal issues of life.

Finally, this is a love story. Lomax is drawn to Dawnelle for sex and she to him for love and the fulfillment of an emptiness she has covered and coped with through her art. But his presence in her life will not allow art to be enough any longer. She needs him and wants all aspects of this man she is in love with. Because of her childhood trauma, she had withheld her love and numbed her emotions. "It was as if her emotions, as a natural cycle of nature, had been hibernating in wait for Spring, and now that it was here, they had come alive and exploded as a time-bomb of nature, blossoming upon Lomax with all their fragrances, hues, gentility, and energy.... And she showed him a magnitude of emotions and love he hadn't experienced."

He sat at the table eating, looking at her, reading her, listening to her, loving her. And as she ate, she watched him, studied him, touched him, talked to him, and marveled at the love she felt for him. He was home, a part of her was back; she felt whole again. Lomax saw her familiar look that said, I love you, but it also said, I'm glad you're home. He had missed her and the chemistry between them. There was a harmony of spirit between them, a harmony he had not known could exist between a man and a woman, or any two people. It was a certain knowledge of each other, a certain pleasure, contentment of mind, and an ethereal rightness of being he wasn't able to articulate or touch clearly with words or thoughts, but it was present between them-he knew it because he felt it. It went beyond any familial or friendship bond. He knew this was where he belonged. It was an aura about being with her that he felt nowhere else and with no one else, and it controlled his emotions more than he knew or understood. Now that he was back home, all his anxieties were stilled. It seemed to him that she satisfied a sort of Adamic hunger that he didn't know was there-it was as if he was intoxicated by her or as if she had cast a spell on him somehow, and she had.

She wasn't aware of it and certainly hadn't planned it, but in a sort of providential way, Dawn had withheld and hoarded all the love she ever had for anything and placed it on Lomax. After the pain and humiliation of her youth, she had suspended her love and numbed her emotions, but now it was as if her emotions, as a natural cycle of nature, had been hibernating in wait for Spring, and now that it was here, they had come alive and exploded as a time-bomb of nature, blossoming upon Lomax with all their fragrances, hues, gentility, and energy. In the providential scheme of things, he had been waited for by her, selected and studied by her, and then emotionally overwhelmed by her. And in the tug of war for sex, he loss the battle, and in so losing, she showed him a magnitude of emotions and love he hadn't experienced. He had so many things he wanted to share with her, but he wanted to whisper them into her ears. He wanted to be close to her, to love her and make love to her, and he wanted to hear all the things that had troubled her, that she cared about, that had plagued her, that made her afraid; he wanted to hear about all of the little things that come together to make up one's day and one's existence. He had not known how much she was a part of him, how good home would feel, and how lonely he had been without her. While away, he hadn't taken the time to consider this, but now he was home and he was recognizing that his hunger wasn't confined to food.

They moved into the bedroom; Lomax knew this room and the joys that it contained. This, too, was a part of a sense of place. With ease in bed, they rediscovered each other's bodies and movements-they held each other, they caressed each other, and they moved with the grace and care of loving swans. He held her, and they celebrated their reunion throughout the night. (pages 205-207)
