For 8 days the nation and the world listened and watched as a search was undertaken for two small boys, whose mother said they were kidnapped in a "carjacking." Then, she confessed. Union, South Carolina's radio station covered the events and helped other news media worldwide report the story.

But Union and its radio station are more than this isolated event--the Susan Smith tragedy.

For 50 years the station has not just covered the town's good times and bad times. It has been uniquely part of them.

This is a story about a small town and its radio station..of ordinary people doing extraordinary things.

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor

Bob Doll started in radio during the "Golden Age." He was a part-time "go-fer" at a station in his hometown of Cincinnati.

In 1951, he left Cincinnati to get enough experience to be considered for a announcing job at one of Cincinnati's major stations.

He found out immediately that he liked doing a little of everything in a small station, and he liked small town living. He never went home.

After announcing jobs and middle management posts in Wisconsin, Indiana, and Kentucky, he got his first job as a manager in 1956, a 100-watt station, WCYN, Cynthiana, Kentucky--a town of 4,900. He was 23.

In 1960, he became minority owner and chief executive of a group based in Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana. He and his backers sold the group in 1974, allowing him to realize a career-long ambition, 100% ownership of his own station, WAOP AM/FM, Otsego, Michigan.

Nine years later, he established the nationwide "Small Market Radio Newsletter." He also operated a radio station consulting and program/seminar business.

Over the years he has been active in many civic and industry groups.

Today he is semi-retired, living in Seguin, Texas, where he writes and does consulting and speaking on a limited basis.
