A murder at a small harness track in western Illinois is resurrected and this leads to the hiring of Bertrand McAbee a reluctant P.I. who was formerly a classics professor. He eventually finds himself in the middle of a pursuit for a vicious serial killer. It seems like McAbee can not avoid violence. He, along with a cohort of memorable helpers, explore harness racing, serial killers, and the maintenence of ethics in a world of virtual chaos.

Joe McCaffrey isn't a classics prof or a P.I. But he is a philosophy professor at St. Ambrose University in Davenport, IA. In 1993 he was named Iowa Professor of the Year in a national competition sponsored by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. He has served on a number of boards in the state including the Iowa Board of Medical Examiners. He has been president of a junior college, a dean of a graduate school of business, a vice president of academic affairs at a chiropractic university and an academic dean. Currently he teaches Ancient Philosophy, Medieval and Renaissance Philosophy, and chairs the Philosophy Department in the undergraduate school, does a leadership seminar and a Business Ethics course in the St. Ambrose MBA Program, and helps oversee the new Doctorate of Business Administration Program.
