The book features 31 stories of fact and fiction by new and emerging writers, each story written in the first person voice. They were culled from about 3,100 first person submissions to Alaska Quarterly Review over a two-year period. The book's presentation of the stories recognizes the primacy of narrative. By choosing not to classify them by genre, each story's purpose is unchanged and yet the reader is brought closer to the story's heart--it's narrative impulse. The premise and methodology of the book are explained in the Editor's Note by Ronald Spatz, and Patricia Hampl's introduction, "First Person Singular," places the first person voice in our literary history and in a more general sense of history. ONE BLOOD: The Narrative Impulse was funded in part, by a Creation and Presentation Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

As background, Alaska Quarterly Review (AQR), is now in its 19th year of continuous publication. It is an award winning literary journal produced by the University of Alaska Anchorage and has been appreciatively reviewed by a variety of sources including the Book World section of The Washington Post ("That one of the nation's best literary magazines comes out of Alaska may seem surprising, but so it is.") and by Library Journal ("highly recommended and deserves applause"). AQR focuses on fiction, nonfiction, drama, and poetry by new and emerging writers. Many of the stories, poems and essays first published in AQR (some of them the first-time publications of their authors) have been selected for The Prize Stories: The O. Henry Awards, The Best American Essays, The Andres Berger Award, The Pushcart Prize: The Best of the Small Presses, The Best American Poetry, and the Beacon Best anthology. Work has also been reprinted in Harper's, Small Press and numerous other collections. AQR hasbeen recognized with an Alaska Governor's Award for the Arts (1996) and 5 National Endowment for the Arts grants. AQR's special anthology, Alaska Native Writers, Storytellers & Orators: The Expanded Edition (1999) was positively reviewed in a range of venues including Kirkus Reviews.

Ronald Spatz is executive editor and founding editor of Alaska Quarterly Review. He is Professor and Chair of the Department of Creative Writing and Literary Arts and Director of the University Honors and the Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholarship at the University of Alaska Anchorage. Spatz is also the founding editor and project director of LitSite Alaska, a new University of Alaska Anchorage web platform,featured in local and national media including The Tech Report of USA Today and The Chronicle of Higher Education. Spatz's writing has appeared in range of national literary journals and anthologies and has been recognized by individual artist fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Alaska State Council on the Arts. He has also produced and directed short subject films including For the Love of Ben, which was broadcast nationally on public television.
