Don Welch started walking alleys as a child, looking for men who bred exotic pigeons. Since then he has won seven poetry prizes, one of which is the Pablo Neruda Prize for Poetry, judged by William Stafford, and he has held the first two endowed chairs, the Martin Chair of English and the Reynolds Chair of Poetry, at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. He still teaches part-time in the Philosophy Department there.
