Inhaltsangabe

Serving up chills and thrills, this collection of haunting tales offers the intelligence and emotional resonance that only comes from great writing. Whether it's John Updike writing about a shadowy Indian in a coastal New England town or T. Coraghessan Boyle's tale of a vengeful statue of the Virgin Mary, these stories show how delicious it can be to curl up with master storytellers and the things that go bump in the night.

The pit yawned dark and sharply smelling. I was staring down at it when I heard the sudden stab of the knife in the earth. With a start I looked up.

From the opposite side of the pit, close to the ground and emerging from it as one who wades through high water or grass, a man was coming toward it. He wore a uniform, too battered to tell which. His arms were raised forward but not stretched, as if he were blindly groping for the food. My hair stood on end, my entire body bristled in the way animals cringe in fear.

He seemed one drowned and left in the water to float supine under the surface, there and not there, blindly groping. The eyes in his face, dull, jelly-like, were horribly open and as spoiled drops of milk, pupils curdled and void.
