Katrina Roberts is finally going home. Home . . . where she can relive the happy memories of her childhood. Home . . . where she can come to terms with the tragedy that changed her life forever. Home . . . where something sinister looms in wait. Home . . . where sheer terror will make her wish she'd never returned . . . home.
She was running as fast as she could. Thin branches whipped mercilessly at her face and dense brush grabbed at her ankles and threatened her balance at every step, but still she ran. She ran because she knew her very being depended on it. Though her eyes were open wide in terror, she could see nothing of neither the trees ahead nor the unknown evil that pursued her. Horror gripped her chest and made it hard to breathe, but even the wracking gasps that emanated from her body did nothing to slow her. It was pure fear that pushed her onward, through the dense woods toward . . . what? Safety? Katrina didn't know, but she knew she had to keep going. How long had she been running? How could she continue at this pace with every breath causing unbelievable stabs of pain to shoot through her body? Her mind knew no answers, but her instincts told her that she could never stop. She would have to run until she could be free from whatever was chasing her. She had never seen her pursuer, she had no idea who or what she was running from, but she knew for certain that to be caught would mean death. How she knew this she wasn't sure, but it was as certain to her as the sun rising in the east. She hadn't slowed even a little since she started running, but she could sense the would-be attacker coming ever closer. Her fear intensified until she thought she would go mad. It was a primal fear, an all-consuming terror that threatened to destroy her very soul and was somehow more threatening than whatever physical danger she was in. Closer, closer, Katrina could sense the distance closing, the brush rustling directly behind her until she heard a voice whisper directly in her ear . . . "Katrina . . . "
