This program evolved from the tremendously successful reading program that Dr. Furr developed. Dr. Furr took his brain research and adapted the reading program to deal with the second most common learning problem in elementary school - learning the multiplication tables. This program has been tested and proved to be as successful as the reading program ..... which has had zero failures.

Dr. David L. Furr is an author, teacher, neuroscientist, and university professor. His truly unbelieveable reading program has brought him a world wide following. Dr. Furr holds advanced degrees in psychology, special education, computer science, and neuroscience. He is married and has four children. Dr. Furr lives in Maryland.
Introduction For the last three years we have been teaching children how to read. What is unusual about that is that the children we have taught to read are children that everyone said would never learn to read. They had many labels: learning disabled, dyslexic, retarded and many others. We developed a program to teach anyone to read, not just people with labels. We used neuroscience principles and a bunch of common sense. We have since taught well over 1600 students to read. Students from age three to 56. Without exception, every one of the 1600 were people that most of the education community had given up on. How were we able to do it? Well for one thing, our income was directly based on our success. Ours was not just a lofty mission for the sake of research. When the research that you do is directly related to providing for your family you find that things get done. This is one of the "failures" of large research universities who only have to complete the project, not apply it to something we can use now. We need that basic research; we couldn't have done ours without it. Many times that kind of research gets reported on to the funding agency or written in journals that are read by scientists only. Most times research stays within its field. Cellular biologists work on cellular biology. They don't try to apply it to learning or anything else.
What we did was take findings from neuroscience, which we understood, and tried to come up with at least a working theory based on the original research. We then tested those theories. Many times we were wrong but we hit gold with one of our theories. Those theories guided us to develop our remarkable reading program. We have had zero failures in that program! What is even more remarkable is that only a few schools and fewer school systems have adopted our program in the United States. Our program has been received more warmly overseas. Why? We chalk that up to human nature. Actually, that part of human nature is a large part of our program. If you understand that part of human nature you understand that we humans are creatures of habit. What we have discovered is a way to make some types of learning into habits. Once they become habits they become imprinted within the brain and are then called "learned." It is ironic that the same principle that guides our program and makes it successful also prevents its wide acceptance.
