Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor

Bernard Turner was born in Bronzeville and educated in the Chicago Public School system. He studied German as an undergraduate at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and attended graduate school at the University of Chicago. Mr. Turner has been a teacher of German and Spanish on the secondary level and has worked in educational publishing in sales and marketing since 1978. Currently, he is a regional sales representative for Zaner-Bloser Educational Publishers and a docent at the Chicago History Museum. He gives tours on Chicago history at CHM, and walking tours of Old Town and Lincoln Park, the park. He also provides Green Line and Brown Line L tours and guided tours of Bronzeville. In 2002, Mr. Turner founded Highlights of Chicago Press with the publication of A View of Bronzeville, a neighborhood tour guide that focuses on the important institutions and people that made Bronzeville a great neighborhood. The second publication, TJ and the Mysterious Stranger, is a children s story that also gives the history of the Bud Billiken character. Published in 2006 is a new social studies book for elementary children called, Our Chicago People and Places. It highlights early Chicago history, including DuSable and Fort Dearborn; key events in Chicago history such as the Fire, the World s Columbian Exposition and the Century of Progress world s fairs; and Chicago government. Highlights of Chicago Press next publication was The Windies City Chicago s Historical Hidden Treasures. The Windies City is a compilation of 25 out-of-the way Chicago tour destinations written by three CHM docents who call themselves the Windies. Just published this June, 2009, is an exciting new neighborhood tour book called Chicago Neighborhoods with Flavor Getting Out of the Loop. This book highlights seventeen Chicago neighborhoods and features a restaurant in each one. It s a historical, cultural, and culinary delight! Mr. Turner is available to speak to audiences, school groups and to conduct tours. He especially likes working with teachers and children to discuss Chicago history and culture with a highlight on Chicago neighborhoods, yesterday and today.
