Inhaltsangabe

Seeking a rational faith for our children in challenging times, this series of letters is written from places of great human striving. The author finds menaing in life and identity through experiences in prisons, board rooms, laboratories, hospitals, cathedrals, remote islands, the Pentagon, cemetaries, and urban ghettos. He demonstrates that the things we hold sacred can be both rational and beautiful, and constructs a glossary of them. He shows that intelligent life is a universal concept, based on the capacity and freedom to organize and communicate, expressed in our "becoming" through progression of our learning, building, healing, singing and loving. And he derives an identity of self-interest with other-interest.

Aus dem Klappentext

Sayre finds in the universal principles of information and energy transfer, order and entropy, some universal principles of intelligent life. These support a rational basis for holding sacred such concepts as love and beauty and the finding of meaning in commitment and freedom in relation. Combining the author's experience with the writings of prominent scientists and philosophers, the book explores our ideas of good and evil, time and courage and God. It proclaims a prevailing Truth, a sustainable basis of identity, and a rational faith, deriving an equation of self-ineterst with other-interest.

Here Nature tolerates improbabilities sustained against her downward slope. Here our local evidence of life begins, and here it ends, casting from its dawns and evenings equal but opposite shadows. Standing in this ambivalent shade, we look out on a probabilistic universe that shows no preference except for equilibrium, a universe tumbling downward to disorder, charting no course except for random walks. Yet here and there the unlikeliest of things appears: a capacity to organize and communicate, a freedom to chosse, and evidence of intelligence.
The hospital is full of shadows and full of light, falling in varying directions upon us as we come and go. One cannot say that life exists precisely here or there, in molecules or stars, or starts or ends, or can be held or lost. The Great Improbability eludes our snares; but if we cannot own it, perhaps we can share it. Perhaps, as we wait for you, we may begin to understnd what it is....
