Find out for yourself why Cypress Book Review is calling THE BOOK "The greatest love letter ever written." Two soul mates find each other, only to be separated for a short time thereafter. Separated by miles and inaccessible to each other via phone, fax or email, one soul mate occupies his/her days (we are never told the sex of either soul mate, which makes the book all the more fascinating) by writing the stories of their past lives together. Though their gender, bodies, and sexual orientation change each life, the recurring thread is the love they share with each other. If you're in love, have ever been in love, or want to know what being in love feels like.....you will love THE BOOK!

There's a wind that blows through the heart of a lover. A wind that knows no boundaries and no endings. A never-ending breeze. It is that wind I call upon each night to save me while we are apart. To guide me, infiltrate me, ride me. It is that wind I call upon to take me to you, tonight. An invocation.
I am outside of this world I live in. I sit behind an opaque sheet of glass, mirroring my actions and words but separate somehow. No one else seems to know. Perhaps they think I am a bit strange, a bit esoteric, a bit uneasy. Perhaps I am. I am outside of their world, participating while all the while observing. I am only in their world when I am with you. When you sit beside me, when we speak, when we walk together through this strange and viscid domain, only then am I of this world we live in, this air I must breathe.. ..I'm sitting outside right now, under the stars, writing this to you. It's a cool, clear night and the quarter moon is dangling before me like an inviting carnival ride. I know you have to be exactly where you are right now, and I must be where I am. I don't know that I know why, but I trust the universe. I am within you there, as you are within me here, but my eyes ache for your smile. So I write this note to you, the largest part of me condensed into the smallest bits of ink. I recall the first time this life I remembered one of our past lives. I don't care for that word past because I know we are forever in the now - but words still the wildest feathers and whip the fiercest fires. I say it the only way I know how, and I know you understand.
Asleep in your lap, nestled into your warm sanctuary, I dreamed a different sort of dream of you and me. It was short and sparse yet carried within it the knowledge of a thousand lifetimes. Peat bricks lined the floor of the earth as we watched and waited for them to dry. Cut from the swampy bog with our jagged carving tools, the squares were uneven and asymmetrical though we had tried for complete uniformity. We used the bricks for building blocks, we used the bricks for fuel. The thick and pungent smell emanating from the deep wound we'd inflicted upon the plateau surrounded us in a maze of acrid air. You continued cutting and stacking the slabs of soil even after the blisters on your hands split open, a dirty testaceous brown stained them, blood and dirt, you and the earth leaving eacn other's precious essence upon the other. You said to keep us safe and warm was more important than the sores on your hands. They would heal as long as we were together.
I could hear the far off cry of a seagull dripping from the mist in my hair. I could feel the mud between my toes and the caked earth across my palms. I could see the strange shards of cloth wrapped about my ankles and tied across my shins. And I could hold your shining eyes in mine as they stared at me from across the field. I knew there was nowhere else I wanted to be, could be, but there, deep in the mud, cold and dirty and uncertain of any future, but with you. When I'm with you, my soul comes alive and my spirit soars. It has been that way for longer than either of us can remember. It is our dream and our present and our past, our future and our life game. It is the cry of a newborn child and the smile of a sparrow. It is the ache and the tarp and the hill. It is all that we are and always will be. And so we continue. ..As I wait for us to be together again, I fill my hours with writing down the stories of our past and alternate lives. They come easily when I call them, old friends we haven't seen for a long time, but whose love still resonates within. They keep me close to you, to us, while we are apart. I write these words to caress your skin in the only way I can at this moment.
I write this for you.
