The Integrated Computer-Aided Manufacturing Definition Method (IDEF0), and its predecessor Systems Analysis and Design technique (SADT), has been in use in the U.S.A., Europe, Australia and Japan for over thirty years. It is the most complete and fully tested system of methods for the design and description of complex systems, projects or enterprises available today. This 3rd edition provides extensive guidance to modelers who wish to learn, step-by-step, how to author, review, revise, stop and annotate an IDEF0/SADT model.

"We are about to embark on a study of modeling...By the word "modeling," we mean the act of developing an accurate description of a system. What is especially difficult is to describe systems of medium complexity, such as telephone network switching, air traffic control, submarine guidance, automobile assembly, the space shuttle, and the operations of a refining plant. from a human perspective, these systems are hard to describe because they are large enough to make impossible (in a practical sense) the enumeration of their components and interactions, and yet they are small enough to make impossible their simplification using generalizing assumptions (e.g. as physics does). [IDEF0/SADT] received extensive use starting in early 1973 on "large-system" problems such as real-time telephonic communications design, computer aided manufacturing (CAM), command and control software, and military readiness. Since then, it has been successfully applied to describe a large number of complicated constructed systems in a wide variety of domains (e.g. banking, oil refining, manufacturing process planning, weapon systems guidance, logistics management, technology planning, software engineering). The reason for this success is that [IDEF0/SADT] is a complete methodology for developing system descriptions, centered on the concepts of system modeling."
