ABOUT: Shear Force: An Image-maker's Memoir (2008) is the autobiography of celebrity hairstylist Allen Edwards, detailing his rise to fame in the world of beauty and glamour despite a lifelong struggle with a debilitating stutter. Written with Lorin Shields-Michel, the book chronicles Edwards' personal and professional journey through the glitzy and turbulent Beverly Hills beauty scene of the 1970s and 80s. Key themes and highlights of the memoir include: Triumph over adversity: Edwards recounts his determined path to success, overcoming the speech disorder that caused him significant difficulty. The book describes how he eventually found a way to manage his stutter, enabling him to thrive in a profession centered on interpersonal communication and self-presentation. The rise of a beauty icon: Edwards traces his career from its early days to his status as an internationally recognized image-maker for celebrities. He recounts developing his personal philosophy, driven by entrepreneurial spirit and a belief in positive self-image. Beverly Hills glamour and drama: The memoir provides a candid, behind-the-scenes look at the celebrity-driven beauty industry. Edwards pulls back the curtain on his experiences styling the hair of Hollywood luminaries like Raquel Welch, Goldie Hawn, and Dustin Hoffman. He also recounts the professional rivalries and personal excesses of the era, including his own exploits and business setbacks. Iconic moments: Edwards describes some of his most famous creations and industry innovations. He takes credit for creating the iconic layered cut for actress Farrah Fawcett and for giving prosecutor Marcia Clark a new look during the O.J. Simpson trial.
