As the 19-year old son of a prominent German Jewish family, Werner Kleeman was a victim of Kristallnacht. He saw the betrayal of his Jewish neighbors as fellow villagers gleefully destroyed their homes and property. He was sent to Dachau, but by the grace of a family friend, was released after six weeks, and left Germany for good. As a new American, Kleeman was drafted and sent overseas to participate in the D-Day invasion. The end of the war brought him back to his own hometown, where he confronted the wreckage of the Jewish community. Denouncing those citizens who participated in Kristallnacht, Kleeman redeemed at least some of the suffering of fellow Jews.About the Author:
