Inhaltsangabe

The Rex is an old hotel on Manhattan's East Side. The tenants, a melting pot of the young, old, eccentric, hopeful, and disillusioned, have ended up in the Rex for a variety of reasons, but they have fashioned homes for themselves in the small rooms of an old hotel. Their homes and lives come under attack and the hotel becomes a battleground when an unscrupulous developer and his hired thugs try to take it over. Several strong women lead the fight to save the tenants' way of life. Frieda, a veteran city social worker, and Marcy, a volatile young artist, take on the developer both inside the hotel and out. Ultimately, The Rex becomes a metaphor for the futility of trying to hang on to the past, but shows how the effort to do so might bring new life to the present. Rick Lawton has written a mainstream, literary novel with likeable well-drawn characters. The Rex is a thoroughly entertaining, page-turning read full of conflict, escalating action, irony, and humor.
