***UPDATE AS OF MARCH 2010*** Dr. Richards has uncovered possible evidence that A Method of Prayer was not written by Johannes Kelpius. A Method of Prayer remains a beautiful and inspiring work, and the background information on the content and publishing history in Dr. Richards' book remain accurate. However, the portions involving Kelpius as the author may no longer have relevance. The evidence is still inconclusive as Dr. Richards continues to pursue this fascinating research. His book includes the text of the German pamphlet that was printed in 1756, a glossary, background essays, and the only translation into modern English.

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor
Dr. Richards earned his Master of Divinity at Princeton Theological Seminary, and his Ph.D. in German Language and Literature at the University of Virginia. In 2007, he was awarded a fellowship from the German Historical Institute to study German Pietism in colonial Pennsylvania.

On June 7, 1756, James Pemberton and five other Quakers resigned their offices as members of the provincial assembly of Pennsylvania. A few months before that, the French and Indian War had officially begun. As pacifists, these concerned Quakers could not remain in a government at war.
Non-pacifist Quakers remained in the assembly, but, as Peter Brock writes: "The resignations of 7 June symbolized the end of Quaker rule in Pennsylvania" (147).
That same year, an intriguing German pamphlet about mystical prayer was printed in Germantown, Pennsylvania...
