After his epic river swim, Spence moved his family from Idaho to Seattle, Washington, where he attended college and pursued studies in medicine and science. Notoriety from his private research earned him a position with Virginia Mason Research Center in Seattle where he became director of the Diving Physiology Research Laboratory. Working with Dr. Merril Spencer, director of the research center, his research work was instrumental in accomplishing a significant breakthrough in the field of submarine medicine. His 35-year diving career was full of exciting expeditions and adventures. In addition to his many exploits, he taught commercial and technical diving at three Seattle area colleges. Having retired from the diving field, he and his wife Marie now own and operate Aviation Training Center at Boeing Field in Seattle.
