In the face of what appeared to be insurmountable odds, the author’s father, Jack Fallon, won a full scholarship to Syracuse University in 1941. A Kingston High School football star 1939-1941, Jack overcame difficult family and financial circumstances to change the course of his post high school life. After her father died, Janine had to decide what to do with all her father’s family stories she had stored in her mind and heart. Over the course of nearly six decades, he had told and retold interesting tales of his youth in Kingston New York. Jack’s father and grandfather had been railroad laborers in the early 20th century and Jack was able to describe long gone places like the West Shore Railroad station and the New York Central roundhouse. Her father had also engaged in a decade long reveal of how difficult family circumstances were for him and his two younger sisters while they were growing up. It seemed natural to the author to compile her recollections, her father’s writings and highlights of sports activities in Kingston in the mid-20th century into a book that could be shared with others. “I Really Didn’t Want to Work on the Railroad” is the first part of a three part series titled “ A Lifetime of Storylistening”. Part 2 “ Becoming a Marine and Serving in the Pacific Theater 1942-1946” and Part 3 “From the Classroom to the Empire State Federation of Teachers “ round out the authors collaborative work with her story telling father, John Leo “Jack” Fallon.
