John is a cancer specialist with 30 years experience in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. He is the Director and Professor of Breast Oncology at the Macquarie University Cancer institute. From 1995 to 2011 he was the founding director of the Westmead Breast Cancer Institute and has published more than 140 research and clinical articles. He is an adviser on various national and international committees and is a member of the Australian Research Council College. He is a busy radiation oncologist and sees patients at the Macquarie University Hospital, a not-for-profit private hospital and Norwest private hospital. His opinion is regularly sought for complex breast cancer problems by patients and other specialist doctors. His patients find him to be an expert clinician, with extensive experience with the ability to explain problems simply to give hope, reassurance and calming accurate information.John s PhD was about what factors predict breast cancer coming back after treatment without a mastectomy. More recently he has been involved in research on DCIS, breast cancer screening and he also leads a translational research program for patients with severe lymphedema.John trained at Westmead Hospital and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. He is the author of Breast Cancer: Taking Control and the soon to be published DCIS of the Breast: Taking Control (two books for patients) and Clinical Breast Examination: Taking Control (a DVD for health professionals).In 2006 he was awarded a national medical media award for outstanding services to the media and the community. John is committed to the dissemination of research findings to lay and professional audiences. In 2013, he was one of four finalists for the NSW Australian of the Year and received the prestigious Rotary Vocational Excellence Award.
