For more than six decades, renowned British Columbia artist Takao Tanabe (b. 1926) has offered his own unique artistic expressions of the Canadian landscape. This magnificently illustrated monograph accompanies the first ever sweeping retrospective exhibition of Tanabe's works on paper and features drawings and watercolors from 1949 to the present day. Three original essays reveal the artist's long and multifaceted career, notably his travels to Japan in the 1950s to study the art of Sumi painting (Japanese Ink brushwork), his exploration of abstraction in the 1960s, and his “black works” of the 1970s and 1980s. Today Tanabe continues to explore the Canadian landscape through pen and ink, graphite, acrylic and watercolor with a sense of purpose and zeal. Regardless of the form adopted in any given period, the subject of “place” remains consistent and vital to Tanabe's artistic endeavor and vision. Takao Tanabe's work is featured in many public and private collections, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Vancouver Art Gallery and the Tate Museum.
