As a new fictional work in forensic psychology, "Gotcha et al," by Dr. Napoleon N. Vaughn, a clinical psychologist draws readers into a web of swift action. His major character, the Psychologist, has no wiggle room. Ditto death by gunfire of a child every two hours and 45 minutes. Add 17,451 victims of non-fatal firearm injuries and 270 million privately own firearms for every man, woman, and child’s gun violence: 12,000 murders and 19,000 suicides annually. Any shrink behind a closed door in the customary 50-minute hour may fall prey to an opposite gender patient during psychotherapy, according to Dr. Vaughn in this novel about a false charge. It avoids disciplinary action, yet culminates in a medical malpractice lawsuit. Loss in the courtroom could mean a judgment of $500,000 not including cost, penalty, and interest. Add psychic pain. No license. No livelihood. No good name. How does someone prove nothing happens, say, like the perennial: When did you stop beating your wife? Dr. Vaughn's journalistic style from formerly as an adjunct professor, School of Theater and Communications, Department of Journalism, Temple University, takes off and gives flight with emphasis aplenty through sharp dialogue. Nationally, the number one cause of death for black males (15 to 19, 20 to 24, 25 to 34) is homicide, 89 percent of the time due to a firearm. And, in Pennsylvania like no other place in the world, 444 juvenile-lifers, some age 10, have been warehoused in prison: LWOP, that is, life without parole. And in prison, they'd rot. The 398 homicide victims in 2004 ranked Pennsylvania number one in the nation. Those nationally in state prisons comprised 113,800 in 2005. Whereas it’s almost 1 in 4 black males in jails or prisons, by 2020, 63 percent of all black men 18 to 34 might be behind bars. While only 13 percent of the population, blacks constitute 47 percent of all homicide victims. Sons, brothers, boyfriends, and more are snuffed out before natural causes. Don’t forget those on death row: 63 percent. ny black youngsters don’t expect to be alive tomorrow. Dr. Vaughn takes the main character on an emotionally painful journey, after the volatile wife in marital counseling with her husband, a City police officer, contacts the State Board of Psychology. It's an untrue claim of sexual misconduct. They had been seen a couple years earlier. Although cleared by the Board, the plaintiffs acquire a lawyer, one also a psychologist, who is out to make a fast buck. They drag the shrink over the coals. Mother, another major character in the novel, yanks at our heartstrings. We empathize with her. Some laugh; others cry. None stands on the sideline. She loses her younger son, Brother, to DVT (blood clots) not long after being shot on orders of a numbers backer. It’s left to her other son, the Psychologist, who daily cares for her, as she wrestles with Alzheimer’s disease and loses her mind. Psychosis, especially hallucinations, drives her “crazy” when the sun goes down. The good Lord takes Mother home on the sweet chariot. Her death brings the Psychologist closer to the arms of a loving God. A non-jury Judge, not only African American like others in the novel, but also a female, ramrods her courtroom. Will she side with the Plaintiff-Wife, both of the same gender? Against this footprint looms crime, violent crime, in Philadelphia where one person was murdered, on average, almost daily for nearly six years. Simultaneously, the clock ticks as the trial date marches on toward Judgment Day. This, a provocative one-of-a-kind work, is warmly endorsed for its real-life portrayal. As an added kick, this bold novel has a full two-act playlette, "The Trial," a courtroom drama of psychodynamics in the ‘hood, urban America's killing field and no man's land. “But the trial is not over until the mythical fat lady sings,” Dr. Vaughn reminds us.
