Collecting names has been a hobby of mine for many years. And as often happens, a hobby has turned into something else. In this case - a book.My husband is on the Board of Directors of an old country cemetery where many of his early ancestors are buried. When I started going to the cemetery with him on clean-up or maintenance days, I began to notice some of the unusual names on some of the older headstones, and I started writing them down in a little notebook. And that's how it started. Over the years we have taken many afternoon drives through the country so that I could walk through the old cemeteries looking for unusual names.The cut-off dates I chose, 1800 through 1930, came about because so many headstones older than 1800 are badly weathered and can no longer be read. And the names after 1930 became more and more familiar to me.Many names that I had never seen before could be attributed to one or more of three things.1. They are names from the old country due to the fact that there were many immigrants moving all across this country during that time period.2. Some of the old-country names were Americanized.3. The more unusual names were just plain made up on the spot, such as Aberrella.Some of the names will be familiar but are listed because I was surprised at how long they have been in use, such as Jane.Some names may be nicknames but I didn't try to guess. I only wrote down exactly what was on the headstone.
