As the Sycamore Grows is the true story of Ginger, raised to pray and obey, and Mike, who vowed at fifteen he'd never become his father — only to see himself, years later, in his father's casket. He says he'd treat Ginger the same all over again. "God made women to serve men," he says. "It's their job."
Told through the present-day memories of the family, friends, and coworkers who lived it alongside her, Ginger emerges as spiritual yet spirited — a flawed heroine whose teenage rebellion once led her to abandon her infant son. It's this son's death, years later, that finally forges her independence and drives her escape. She named the tree that marks her freedom for him. It grew slowly, like independence itself.
This is Ginger's story, and Mike's — though it didn't begin with either of them. Winding from south Texas to a sycamore tree in Tennessee, it's a story Georgia Public Broadcasting called a look at what it takes to overcome whatever holds us back from our potential — domestic violence and beyond.
