Trent Lowery is a writer of pulp fiction thrillers living in Cincinnati in 1900. He has achieved great success and is content in his chosen occupation while anticipating his upcoming betrothal to a Bluegrass Belle. His publisher interrupts to persuade him to journey into the country near the headwaters of the Big Sandy River with the objective of gathering material on the raging feuds there that can be converted into popular fiction. One of these feuds is over the mineral rights to the coal that lies plentifully in the area. Trent soon discovers that his fiancée’s father is complicit in cheating the local people out of their property. He finds himself in a dispute with her while at the same time drawn to the young daughter of one of these families. And rather than being a passive observer he finds himself choosing sides. Roe does a masterful job of capturing the sights and sounds of this bygone era. He weaves a tale that is thrilling and romantic at the same time. The reader finds him/herself caring greatly for these people and rooting for Trent to right the wrongs visited upon them.
