As a volume of poems and photos, Reconsidered Light covers thousands of miles, through common scenes and unusual scenes, but each with provacative power that forced poetic responses to his photos by Keith Moul. He is powerless to resist capturing images that present themselves to him and is compelled often to mine those images for, what William Stafford, one of Keith's favorite poets, called "golden threads." Keith loves travel, especially by car, to any place with enough room to stop at the side of the road and record what he sees, views that many would pass without a second thought. Then he works those captured images into drama or beauty to his eye. His craft of poetry has evolved over more than 40 years to produce a calm, conversational cadence, in phrasings both lyric and narrative as appropriate to the images.

Keith Moul thinks of Reconsidered Light as a confluence of two separate streams that have engaged his life. He has spent about 45 years learning his poet’s craft; he has spent about the same time working to improve the quality of his photos as evidence of the beauty he sees in the world. He has moved comfortably between navigating one stream then the other. Poems are acts of unique discovery, expressed in appropriate cadences and felicitous language. Keith’s photos embraced mastery of a difficult medium, without direct control and responsibility for their development. Recently he converted to digital photography (involving an incredible gift from friends) and management of light within an image became an inspiration for another kind of discovery, enabling Keith to “photosynthesize” words and images. He considers this his birth as an artist. Reconsidered Light collects his work. And, in collaboration with his daughter, Ianthe Moul, he has expanded his poetic response to include digital reproductions of her paintings. Ianthe’s work makes immediately available storehouses of vitality and emotional content for which Keith’s poetry expresses a special appreciation. KEITH MOUL’S STATEMENT OF ARTISTIC PHOTOGRAPHY I do not restrict my subject matter except to common decency. Good photos require good light, or at least enough light to manipulate with editing software. Any photo taken may produce at least one version of itself that is worth retaining; often it contains more than one version by cropping the original. I never alter content by eliminating part of it or changing its position within the frame. I alter an original photo with five priorities in mind: High resolution High color saturation Maximum contrast Superior brightness Depth of subject, especially on landscapes or panoramic views; or roundness of more intimate subjects Therefore, I do not seek “realism,” but vibrancy.
