Buff Chace was raised in Providence until he went away to school in the 1960s. After moving back to town in 1985 with his wife, Johnnie, Buff established Cornish Associates, a real estate development company operating under the principles of The Congress of New Urbanism. Buff prefers the term “town builder” or “neighborhood builder” to developer when describing his profession. Buff lives on the East Side of Providence, and he is active in promoting preservation, smart growth, and a competitive 21st-centrury economy for Providence and the state of Rhode Island. Buff and Johnnie have four children and recently welcomed their first grandchild.
Like the urban cores of many American cities, Providence, Rhode Island, experienced a marked post-war decline when its commerce and population fled to the suburbs. Nowhere was that trend more apparent than in the vacant historic buildings and storefronts of the city's retail district, now known as Downcity—the literal and metaphorical heart of Providence. In 1991, after the great potential of Downcity's intact urban fabric and historic architecture was realized, a large-scale revitalization was launched. It continues to this day.
