In both GCSE and A Level Maths courses every student will come across many equations and functions. Some are easy to understand others far more difficult. This book has been written to try and make equations and functions more accessible by adding a visual perspective – being able to see a graph of the function. It’s not meant to be read from cover to cover, but referred to whenever you need help with a new equation you have come across in your course.Quadratic equations are probably the first kind of function that most students see on their maths course which cause problems. In chapter 1 all possible forms of the quadratic equation are discussed. At A Level, polynomials are introduced and there is extensive coverage of these in terms of real and complex roots.Although the student may not find the exact function they are looking for, they should find an equation which is very similar and they should then be able to infer the properties of their equation from a similar one.Asymptotes are common features of many functions especially Rational Functions and these restrict the range of values where calculations can be performed on the function. Advice is often given on where the function can be calculated which is useful if asked to evaluate a function for a particular x value. In chapter 10 you are recommended to download from Microsoft, Mathematics 4. This is a really useful app; amongst its many features, it allows you to create some very colourful 3D plots.
