Jennifer, a young widow, cooks dinner in the kitchen of her Devon cottage, unaware of the breaking news. A few miles away a 14-year-old schoolgirl has fallen into a swollen, icy river on Dartmoor during a training walk for the Ten Tors Challenge. The girl is airlifted to hospital in a critical condition. But she doesn’t regain consciousness. Her name is Charlotte Shaw. She is Jennifer’s only child. Now the hell begins. And in this moving, vividly written memoir Jennifer tells you exactly what it’s like. She leaves nothing out. If you’ve ever lost a child and felt like you wanted to die, or if you seek to know more about the vulnerability and resilience of the human spirit under pressure, this book will answer your questions. A compelling and original narrative, it will provide for many who have suffered immeasurable loss the comfort that they are not alone.

Jennifer is a playwright and author. Her first book, 'A Testament of Grief' has just won an International Georgina Hawtrey-Woore award for non-fiction. Among the on-line reviews is the word 'Masterpiece' and 'possibly the best book on grief ever written'. From the book emerged her first play, a mundane and metaphysical piece about a mother who has lost a child, ‘Dolly Gone’. Having staged her own musical about Austerity in 2013/14, which she describes as 'a work in progress', she has now finished the final draft of her third play, which is awaiting a staged read. Jennifer currently gives talks on 'grief, the hero and creativity' and has just begun writing her fourth play and her next book. A History of Art graduate from Warwick University, she has spent much of her life working to reduce inequalities. But after the death of her only child, Charlotte, on Dartmoor, eleven years ago, she was compelled to write about the grief and her career as a writer began. Jennifer lives in a little thatched cottage in Devon with two cats Crumble and Custard and frequently spends time in London.
