Inhaltsangabe

In this absorbing book, John Snare tells the remarkable story of his own quest to uncover the history and provenance of a rare portrait by the Spanish master Diego Velasquez. The portrait in question is a stunning portrayal of Prince Charles, later Charles I of England, painted by Velasquez in 1623. Snare became obsessed with the painting after discovering it in a provincial auction in 1847, and spent years researching its origins and significance. The result is a riveting narrative that weaves together elements of art history, biography, and personal memoir. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in the art and politics of the Baroque era.
