The book deconstructs how under Colonialism Muslims were categorised into three broad but overlapping categories - Ashraf, Ajlafs, and Arzals - and that Muslims were categorised into Asiatic, Non-Asiatic, Foreign, Mixed, and Hindustani - Muslim categories. It argues that few colonial theories applied to Muslims.
