Fifteen-year-old Samson Ndlovu Zondi has buried his parents, lost almost everything his family owned, and inherited responsibility for three younger brothers.

Danie Adendorff is a South African born writer and retired academic whose working life has crossed policing, security, research and higher education. Much of that life unfolded during decades of profound political and social change in South Africa, experiences that continue to shape the subjects he writes about.Samson is different from his management and strategic writing. It is a story about ordinary people living with the consequences of history: families carrying grief, communities negotiating faith and tradition, and young people forced to make choices in circumstances they did not create. Set in rural KwaZulu-Natal in 1996, the novel reflects his long-standing interest in South African society, Zulu cultural life, inherited violence, dignity and the human consequences of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.Adendorff now lives in South Wales, United Kingdom, where he writes full time. He publishes independently through WDA Publishing, the imprint he established in 2014. Across fiction, essays and non-fiction, his central interest remains the same: how history and difficult circumstances shape human judgement, and how people decide what they will carry forward and what they will leave behind.
