His childhood was idyllic, growing up at Shiplake Lock on the River Thames - he often boasts that he had a boat before he had a bicycle. However, a tragedy at the lock involving his father, Peter Gough, in 1982 would have a profound impact on his life and future career. Darran is in his 40th year as a Oxfordshire firefighter.
