Inhaltsangabe

The mystery cult of Isis became a prominent alternative religion within the Roman culture, with temples and shrines throughout the Roman world from the Late Republic to the fourth-century CE. The cult had contact with every socio-economic stratum. However, as a foreign cult, the religion of Isis faced certain challenges, even being banned from Rome in the Late Republic and having its shrines destroyed. The Isis cult overcame persecution to become one of the most dominant voluntary religions, with a place alongside traditional Roman religion. Isis of the late Republic had a monotheistic rival, Judaism that managed to coexist in turbulent times. The cult also had another monotheistic rival that would eclipse this dominant religion. This study examines the evolution of each religion in the Roman world from the late republic to the fourth century.
