Big Mack is the story of Harrison MacDougald Matthews, who goes from being a big kid in grade school to being an outstanding baseball player in high school and college to being a professional baseball player in Detroit to a being a high school teacher and coach in Texas to lbeing a missionary and Little League coach in India, where he dies as in a tsunami as a martyr in his sixties. In the meantime, he becomes a good harmonica player, marries a girl from Saskatchewan, experiences the loss of a wife, goes blind, remarries—this time, a nurse on her way to run an orphanage in India—and, with his new wife, takes in a twelve-year-old African-American boy, and helps authorities catch a gang which has stolen hundreds of cars.
