Set in Cornwall, the story focuses on the Trevethlan family, exploring the ideas of family duty, social class, and personal ambition. The first volume, published in 1848, introduces the struggles of Randolph Trevethlan and his sister, Helen, who aim to restore their family's wealth and reputation amid difficult circumstances.
