I have great pleasure in giving Mr. John Williams, our dragoman, the best character; although for a long time very ill and suffering greatly, he stuck to us like a man, even though he could have left with Dr. Stiven for Constantinople. I feel I am only doing my duty to him in adding the above. Dr. Stoker's report. v 1 Description of journey to relief of Erzeroum Staff Erzeroum, Feb. 8, 1878. Owing to stress of weather wo did not arrive at Trebizond until Jan. 27, but found all preparations completed for our journey up country, and after two hours' delay we started. Mr. Stoney had telegraphed to Mr. Biliotti. We were obliged to stop most of the night at Jevislik to rest the post-horses. We started early the next morning and spent the night on the top of the Zegana pass; the road was excessively difficult, the snowdrifts were in some places twenty feet deep, and what little path there was (about two feet wide) was frozen and slippery, and wound along the edge of a cliff about 900 feet high. At times the baggage horses fell and we were obliged to unpack and reload them--these unfortunate accidents delayed us greatly, and it was two hours after dark before we reached the summit of the pass. The next day we reached Gumush Khane without any difficulty, and here for the first time since leaving Trebizond we got a relay of posthorses. On the following morning we left Gumush Khane two hours before daylight, and after a ride Dr. Stokku's of eighteen hours arrived at Baiburt. We spent the next day endeavouring to get horses to go report. on, and succeeded at last; we were, however, obliged to lodge the value of the horses with' General Kemball,...
