IOO, or a Juppoltd, equivalent in Bills, at fiated by the General Assembly, as often as tht depreciated State of the Bills Jeemed to require, "was paid by the Treasurer, till the Tear I 755. When a French War and heavy Taxes came on, and the Bills were ordered to be called in; so that the General Assembly did not Stale an Equivalent, and nothing-was paid by the Trealm er to the College, for several Tears. And by Reason of the great Number of Students, about that Time, the College, with great Frugality was able to lub/ifi. After the Charges of the War were in some Measure abated, (tho' the Colony was stilt under prrssing Difficulties) the Assembly took the State and Exigencies of the College, into Consideration: And thereupon a Question arole, in the Honorable House as Representatives,' Whether any legal Claim or Demand could be mad 'upon the said annual Grant, or the Arrearages os it.' This Question was debated at several Sessions i and the House lucre la t.eur equally divided in their Sentiments upon it, as that a Mejor Vote could not be obtained for the Payment or Grant of any Money, upon a Supposition of the Truth of either Side of tie Question. Upon a Proposal made in the House, ' That the President and Fellows Ifooulddo Jonye thing to. remove that Difficult J and a Committee of the House being thereupon appointed...
