Alluding to an incident mentioned by Mr. Cadell, he referred to a Somerset colliery where some pumps had been left, and in time the shaft became closed and watertight, producing a high head of water, which overflowed at another point, higher in the shaft, in a very inconvenient way. This obstruction was blown away with dynamite. He remembered an instance at a North of England colliery in which gas had accumulated in the bottom of a shaft under water. The water was standing in the sump in an abnormal way, which it was difficult to account for, and he made levellings to ascertain whether the level of the water corresponded with that of the standage close by, from which the water came. The water in the shaft was found to be much higher. Shortly afterwards the matter was explained by the gas underneath making a water-blast. He proposed a vote of thanks to Mr. Cadell for his valuable paper. The President (Mr. J. S. Dixon) seconded the resolution, which was cordially approved. Mr. A. R. Sawyer's paper on " The Tarquah Gold-field, Gold Coast, West Africa," was read as follows:--THE TARQUAH GOLD-FIELD, GOLD COAST, WEST AFRICA. By A. R. SAWYER. The Tarquah gold-field is situated in the Gold Coast colony. It is connected with the coast at Sekondi by a narrow gauge ('U feet) railway. This railway, which is being constructed to Koomasi, is already open for traffic between the village of Tarquah (situated somewhere about the centre of the south-eastern edge of the goldfield) and Sekondi, a distance of 40 miles; and its course from Tarquah is as far as Cinnamon Bippo, a distance of about 7 or 8 miles along the south-eastern e...
